Item Details
Description
A contemporary still life photograph titled "The Spilled Cream" (AR #386) by American photographer Irving Penn. Photograph date, 6-12-1980. Medium pf print platinum-palladium print mounted to aluminum. Printed in June 1981. Signed on the verso with an annotation of 30/58. Copyright 1981 by Irving Penn. The artist puts a spin on the traditional still life by showcasing a scene of imperfection. He captures the moment after a pitcher of cream has presumably fallen over or clumsily dropped. This has caused the cream to flow out of the pitcher and the dish holding fresh plumb cherries is now broken. Although a mess, the composition is balanced with an interplay of line and volume. With this still life, Penn was able to find beauty in the chaos. From a private collection. Dimensions: 26.25"h x 32.25"w x 1.25"d (framed). In excellent condition. Irving Penn (1917-2009) was an American photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes. Penn's career included work at Vogue magazine, and independent advertising work for clients including Issey Miyake and Clinique. His work has been exhibited internationally and continues to inform the art of photography. Major art institutions hold the artist's photographs including The Art Institute of Chicago and The Smithsonian American Art Museum. In the April 2023 Phillips Photography auctioned "Harlequin Dress (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn)" (1950) for the third highest price of the entire auction at $355,600. "Cuzco Children" (1948) also sold for above high-estimate $95,250.
