Description
National Gallery of Art & Yale University Press, Washington DC & New Haven, 2005. First edition, first printing (with a full numberline ending in 1). 12 x 9.5 inches. 190 pages with numerous photographic images throughout by Irving Penn (87 tri-toned b&w, 5 b&w and 20 color plates). Includes, chronology, checklist, bibliography, index; and text by Sarah Greenough. SIGNED BY PENN on the half-title and inscribed to Pierre Apraxine (noted photography collector and compiler, former assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art, and most notably helped build one of the greatest private holdings of pictures, the Gilman Paper Company Collection, which vaulted the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the forefront of photography institutions after its acquisition). Although much of Irving Penn's work was undertaken for reproduction in magazines, since the early 1960s he has also made a limited number of platinum/palladium prints of his most celebrated photographs. A meticulous craftsman, Penn has experimented extensively with this process in order to make prints with remarkably subtle, rich tonal ranges and luxurious textures. This volume showcases the platinum/palladium prints of Penn’s most iconic images, including portraits; studies of indigenous people; still lifes; and fashion studies. Published to accompany an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art.
