"The focus of Emigre is on the unique perspective of contemporary writers, poets, journalists, graphic designers, photographers, architects and artists who live or have lived outside their native countries." - from the publisher's website. The magazine ran for a total of 69 issues, from 1984-2005. Rudy VanderLans is indeed a Dutch émigré who moved to Berkeley to study photography in 1981 and later became one of the pioneers in typography using the Macintosh computer. The fonts featured in the magazine gained such a following that he founded the Emigre Type foundry to distribute them.
