Description
Cylinder cup of a rifleman king of Bohemia, 2nd half of the 19th century Colourless glass. Back with notched star. Frontal scene: an elderly gunman in a dressing gown hitting the bull's eye and admired by other gentlemen in period costume. Crowned monogram ''IB'' on the reverse and inscription: ''Long live the Schuetzengesellschaft''. Underneath the beveled lip edge is a circumferential stone-cut border. H. 13.5 cm From the 19th century onwards, the dressing gown began to be given a more figure-hugging silhouette. For a long time, these garments were made of colorful fabrics such as silk damask, printed cotton or even velvet and were a clear hallmark of the upper class. Because it was considered particularly rude to appear "in shirt sleeves" in the presence of guests, it was acceptable to throw on a dressing gown if you were not yet in your official attire and had to receive someone. The dressing gown kept the form, expressed a certain familiarity and modesty towards the visitor and also kept warm in the often draughty walls. With this mug one may express the superiority of the experienced shooter with the dressing gown.
