Two Ship Drawings by Oscar Laighton with Original Photographs and Autographed Memoir (Isle of Shoals, 1910-1930) Two framed pencil and ink drawings of schooners under full sail by Oscar Laighton (1839-1939), Isle of Shoals, Maine and New Hampshire, signed "Laighton" and "Oscar Laighton" in lower right. Together with three original photographs of Laighton and a copy of his memoir Ninety Years at the Isles of Shoals (1935), inscribed "Greetings from Oscar Laighton." Oscar Laighton (1839-1939) was a carpenter, poet, hotelier, and colorful raconteur who spent nearly a century on the Isle of Shoals, a small group of islands located several miles off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine. Together with his brother and sister, the famed author Celia (Laighton) Thaxter, he operated summer resorts on Appledore Island and Star Island. In the early twentieth century Laighton produced a small body of sketches, mostly of ships and fish, that can now be found in the collections of the New Hampshire Historical Society, Portsmouth Athenaeum, and University of New Hampshire.
