Description
Mark Maggiori (California / France, b. 1977), cowboy on horseback, watercolor on artist paper
sight: 8.5 x 11 in., frame: 20 x 23 in.
Provenance: A University Place, Washington collection
After graduating from the prestigious Academie Julian in 2000, Mark Maggiori purused a career as the lead singer of a successful band, and as a film director. But he turned to painting full time after winning the Sam Houston award at the 2017 Night of Artists at the Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. He started to work more en plein air on ranches with cowboys and on horseback in New Mexico, Arizona and Wyoming. Like Henry Farny, another Frenchman who made his way to the Southwest to paint its way of life, Mark has carved a unique place for himself within Western art, a place where his work—part Frank Tenney Johnson, part Herbert “Buck” Dunton, with shades of Tom Ryan and Bill Owen—continues to provoke the minds of young and old Western collectors alike.
