Item Details
Description
Tillman Parker Goodan (American, 1896-1958). (1) "Bomber and Buckaroos" and (2) "Range Baby" lithographs, ca. 1939 to 1940's. Both signed in plate at lower left. Till Goodan was an artist as well as a rodeo rider who created art inspired by cowboys in the American West. This wonderful and quite sizable pair of lithographs feature scenes of this nature: a pair of cowboys and 3 horses observing an airplane as they stride across the sprawling desert and a lone cowboy on horseback confronting a young colt amongst a herd of horses in a glorious Western landscape. Born in Colorado, Goodan moved to California in 1905 where he became an artist and also worked on a farm as a cowhand, roper, and rodeo hand. Goodan's art focused on the world he loved and experienced firsthand. Size (both about the same): 31.5" W x 21.75" H (80 cm x 55.2 cm); of plastic protective covering: 43.5" W x 32.75" H (110.5 cm x 83.2 cm)

Till Goodan's early art commissions were for the Hollywood motion picture industry as well as theaters such as Graumann's Chinese Theater. Goodan continued riding in rodeos while painting cowboys, and his friends included famous Hollywood cowboys Gene Autry, Buck Jones, as well as Tom, Mix, and Roy Rogers. Interestingly, Goodan also drew imagery for the Gene Autry comic books!

Goodan spent the majority of his life in California. He set up a studio and home in Hollywood, and owned a ranch near Lebec as well as a mountain retreat in the Sierras. While Goodan painted the California landscape, many of his paintings were inspired by his love for the desert lands of Arizona and New Mexico. He painted from first-hand experience in these locations and lived a western lifestyle right until the day he died - suffering from a heart attack while serving as Grand Marshall of the Tulare California Rodeo on May 24, 1958.
