Description
Hibiscus, watercolor on paper, 21 x 14, signed lower right: Lola Mueller, Lola Vivian Pace Mueller spent most of her life in San Antonio, after moving from her native Atlanta, Georgia, to pursue artistic studies. She attended the Witte Memorial Museum School of Art and the San Antonio Art Institute, working with a number of well-known Texas artists, such as José Arpa (Spanish-American, 1858–1952), Martha Axley (American, 1898-1985), and Harry Anthony DeYoung (American, 1893-1956). Mueller became known for her genre scenes, landscapes, florals, and figural work, in an idiom that fluctuates from detailed and naturalistic, to highly stylized. In addition to watercolor, her body of work includes oil painting, etching, lithography, drawing, and ceramics. Mueller was a Red Cross volunteer painting instructor at the Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio during World War II.
