Description
Magnolia Blossoms, oil on board, 16 x 20, signed lower right: Anastasia Salt, Label attached to verso: Bill and Mary Cheek Collection. Note: Salt became known in Texas for her still life scenes, many of which are regionally representative of the Southwest. A native of New Orleans, Salt moved to Fort Worth with her family during her teenage years, where she grew interested in the indigenous groups of New Mexico and Arizona. The studied and spent time with the Zuni, Hopi, and Navaho peoples, becoming exceptionally familiar with their rich cultures. These native groups are represented often in her work. Salt participated in major Texas exhibitions in the 1930s and 1940s, such as the Annual Texas Artists Exhibition, and the Annual Fort Worth Local Artists Show. Salt is thought to have been a self-taught artist, though it is possible she studied with established European artists overseas.
