Still Life, oil on canvasboard, 14 x 17, signed lower right: MHH, A Texas native, Haltom was born in Anson and moved to San Antonio in 1916. There, she studied with renowned area artists such as Robert Jenkins Onderdonk (American, 1852–1917), Julian Onderdonk (American, 1882-1922), José Arpa (Spanish-American, 1858–1952), and Xavier Gonzales (American, 1898-1993). Haltom’s training also took her to the art school of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and thereafter she studied briefly in Austin. Upon returning to San Antonio in 1937, Haltom began working in civil service and continued until retirement. Her body of work includes mostly still life scenes and landscapes, rendered in subtle brushwork.
