Description
Buildings in a Landscape, 1955, watercolor on paper, 16 x 28 1/2, signed lower right: Fr. Philip Szeitz, S.O. List, 1955, Szeitz’s townscape recalls earlier Regionalist work, but in a style that pulls subtly from the Cubists’ fracturing and distortion of space and form. Devoid of any signifiers of life, despite structures that appear to be homes, Szeitz’s gloomy scene evokes a sense of isolation and despair. Szeitz was a painter, printmaker, and sculptor, who worked primarily in bronze. His work has been featured in a number of exhibitions, notably in the traveling Annual Texas Painting and Sculpture Exhibition (1959), the Dallas Museum of Art’s Annual Dallas County Exhibition of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture (1961), and the Southwestern Print and Drawing Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art (1964).
