Abandoned, 1935, watercolor on paper, 13 1/4 x 19 1/2, signed lower right: Robert Lockard '35, Lockard moved to Texas in 1935 when he accepted a position at Texas Technological College in Lubbock, teaching architectural design and painting (1935-73). Lockard was born in Kansas, and earned two degrees in architecture from Kansas State College. In 1933, he became director’s assistant at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Lockard’s diverse body of work includes genre scenes, regionalist subject matter, landscapes, and abstract work, and he favored watercolor as a medium. Lockard exhibited work throughout the country, most notably at the 7th Annual Kansas Artists Exhibition in Topeka (1931), the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in New York City (1933-36), and the Texas Centennial Exposition in Dallas (1936).
