Lot of 8. 1) Anglo-California Gold Mining Company stock. Mariposa County. No. 6309, issued in 1853 for one share. Signed by two directors and the company secretary. No vignette. Approx. 8" x 8" square. According to Filer (Holabird), this was the largest foreign issue of a California Gold Rush venture that we know of. The company literally sold thousands of shares. The company began as the Anglo California Gold Mining & Dredging Co. in 1849, owned by Luke Williams. It was the last of Williams "gold bubble company promotions." Williams sent Henry Vere Huntley to Calaveras River in 1849. Huntely was unsuccessful, so he hired miners of the Quartz Rock Mariposa Gold Co. and arranged a deal with them. While he was in America, the name of the company had changed. The lack of progress and name changing made the directors of the company very suspicious, and they forced Williams out in April 1851. The new directors decided to crush and process ore mined by others and sent two steam engines and crushing mills on the Augusta that year. Willow Valley District, Nevada County, California. Issued in 1877 to Wm. White for 100 shares in Nevada City. Signed by president R. B. Symington and Secretary F. A. Sacket. Not cancelled. On the reverse two assessments were paid in 1878. The pay chute lost in 1879 between the 320- and 420-foot levels, was re-discovered in 1881 leading to paying ore. Receipt for Frederick Morris for a $10 deposit for a deposit on a patent "for new process for amalgamating Gold & Silver ores." Signed by the Assistant Treasurer.
