Item Details
Description
Lot (x3) of Comstock mining stock. All of these certificates come from the 'gut' of the Comstock, from Virginia City to Silver City. Includes: 1) Bullion Mining Company, Rare pre-1900 stock for this mine. Inc. 1874. "Gold Hill Dist." printed above title. No. 33821, issued for 200 shares in 1895. Signed by president Thomas Cole and secretary William Bowers. Not cancelled. Black border and print. Galloway Litho. Co., SF. Folds, pinholes, soiling. The Bullion Mine, staked in 1859, was located 1/2 mile north of Gold Hill on the north side of Bullion Ravine. It was promising property because it had rich Comstock mines on either side: the Chollar-Potosi and Consolidated Imperial. The Bullion absorbed the Corser, Eastern Slope, Wellington, and Fairview claims; 944 ft. total. No recorded production, even though the mine was operated from 1862 to the early 1900s. John Mackay was first a trustee of the mine in 1863, then superintendent in the late 1860s. 2)Exchequer Mining Company [x=#8211/] Gold Hill, Nevada Stock Certificate No. 256 for 10 shares made out to Wm. M. Graham dated August 15, 1865. The company was incorporated on July 19th, 1865, and capitalized at $2,400,000; 8000 shares at $300 each. An embossed company seal is centered at the bottom. Signatures include Wm. Hillis, Secretary and S. Heydenfeldt, President. The mine was located in Gold Hill next to the Yellow Jacket. (Reference: Pacific Coast Annual Mining Review and Stock Ledger October 1878, p.195), The Exchequer lies next south of the Bullion and between it and the Alpha. It has been prospected through the Bullion and Imperial shafts. Explorations down to the 1700-, 1800-, and 2000-foot levels crosscuts have shown only low-grade ore. Number of feet is 400. Note: In late 1878 some 13 years after this certificate was issued there were 100,000 shares and assessments (12) had added up to $380,000. The Mine is listed in Becker's Geology of the Comstock Lode and Washoe District 1882 on p. 410. William S. Hillis of Bailey & Hillis is listed in Langley's Business Directory of San Francisco for 1866, p.227 as is Solomon Heydenfeldt on p.225, a well-known attorney that is either an officer or trustee of many mining companies. Black and white with vignette of woman at left. Lith. Britton & Co. S.F. Fine condition. Gold Hill Dist., Storey Co., NV - No. 13171, issued to John Turnbull, Trustee on March 17, 1891 for 100 shares. Signed by A.K.P. Harmon as president and D.C. Bates, secretary. Incorporated Feb. 27, 1872, and capitalized at $10,800,000; 108,000 shares at $100 per. Number of feet: 4200. Over a $1,000,000 of high-grade ore was taken from this site early on.
