In 1937, Joe Louis, "the Brown Bomber", became the world heavyweight champion boxer with his defeat of James J. Braddock. That year in Cleveland, Charles Sallée taught at Karamu House while working on his BS degree in education at Case Western Reserve University. Louis established himself as an African American hero as he reigned as the heavyweight champion until 1949; today he is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
