A thrilling disaster film, director G.W. Pabst's Kameradschaft is about a group of French miners trapped underground following a fire and an explosion and the brave cadre of German miners who risk everything to bring them to safety. The film is based on an actual event, the 1906 Courrieres mine disaster, one of the worst industrial accidents in history, in which a lack of trained mine rescuers hampered efforts to free workers after a coal dust explosion. Teams from Paris and Westphalia, Germany, had to be brought in to help the French miners, but despite their heroic efforts, nearly 1,100 lives were lost, including children. Aside from its adventurous narrative, Pabst's film is also a heartfelt plea for peace and cooperation between France and Germany, who had fought against each other in World War I, with the action of breaking through the barriers of rock and rubble compared to breaking through the barriers of old grievances and mistrust that still existed on both sides in 1931. German posters from the inter-war period are exceptionally scarce, making this a rare occasion to add this beauty to your collection.
