The present painting derives from a similar composition, with some variations in the figures, now at the Art Institute, Chicago (Charles H and Mary F. S. Worcester Collection, inv. 1969.3). As Slatkes and Franits noted (see Literature), the author of this picture has eliminated Saint Peter and added a more prominent and traditional version of the saint and a soldier whose excited gesture opposes that of the accusing servant woman. These figures are similar to physical types favored by Gerard Seghers and his followers. In fact, a similar Saint Peter appears in Seghers's Denial of st. Peter in (North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh).
