Rare. The Thorne family was originally from Long Island, NY, where they were among the earliest settlers. Samuel Thorne (1725-1779) was a prominent merchant and landowner in New York City and Long Island, who served in various political and military positions during the Revolutionary War. His son, Jonathan Thorne (1759-1816), was an influential merchant and planter in South Carolina, who also served in the state legislature and as a delegate to the U.S. Congress.
Samuel Thorne had a property or residence in Washington, NY which is located in Dutchess County, a rural and agricultural region in the 1700s and 1800s. Many prominent families from New York City and Long Island owned land and estates in Dutchess County for farming, hunting, and recreation. The area was also an important center for commerce and trade, with access to the Hudson River and the Erie Canal.
