In this first of three film versions of the Dashiell Hammett crime novel, Ricardo Cortez stars as Sam Spade, the world-weary detective who gets mixed up with bad girl Ruth Wonderly, played by Bebe Daniels. This gritty tapestry of crime and mystery pre-dates the Hays Code era, offering a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the underbelly of thrillers.
