Description
Two Indian sandstone sculptures
11th/12th century; Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, India
The first, a torso of a male deity, the curvaceous form with a stippled nipple, a pleated dhoti cinched around the well-defined fleshy belly, adorned with a necklace and armband; the second a bust of Kali, her emaciation visible in the bulging eyes, protruding cheekbones and collarbones, her dreadlocks pulled back, 2 pieces
Torso stone: 8.75" H x 7.25" W x 3.75" D; Plinth: 8" cubed; Bust: 9.875" H x 8.25" W x 5.5" D

Exported from India, Export License F 4-1 / 6560 / 66-CAI (3), (Torso, Box 9, line 19, and Bust: Box 8, line 33), granted by S. Rao, Assistant Educational Advisor, Ministry of Education, and by Director General of Government of India, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi, in 1966
Condition
The torso with spalling in discrete areas with associated losses, including proper left pectoral muscle and proper upper left shoulder. Losses also include parts of the necklace. Chamunda with losses to her proper upper right forehead and front of the torso, perhaps relating to her angled placement in a niche.
