Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
India, Gupta Dynasty, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A high-relief carving of a reddish sandstone bust of a female wearing an ornate floral crown. The face displays a serene expression, with side almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and puffy lips which form a slight smile. Large ears show off lengthy dangling earrings, and a stylized beaded necklace hangs around her broad chest. The Gupta period is sometimes referred to as India's Golden Age, when imperial patronage allowed the arts to flourish; this period had great influence on subsequent periods, like that of the Pala Empire and Kashmir. Their refined artistic forms are characterized by fluid, almost whimsical carving, with gentle curves and a geometric attention to symmetry and shape.
