Item Details
Description
New Brunswick, NJ, dated 1843

A charming insight explains why this painting was made for the frame.

Inscribed on the back in ink cursive writing: (JANE HELENA MANLEY 1843 I NEVER LEARNED THE ART OF PAINTING BUT I MERELY WANTED/ THIS FOR TO HAVE SOMETHING IN THE FRAME AS SARAH TOOK HERS OUT). Note: In 1843 Jane was 24 years old and her sister Sarah was two years older.

This interesting picture was worked in crayon on paper by Jane when she was at age 24. The picture depicts a well-dressed couple sitting on a fallen tree on the bank of a stream under towering trees with a water fall in the background, reminiscent of vistas found near New Brunswick, NJ. Above them is a small white clapboard center-chimney house. The man is reading from a small book while the young lady is leaning in with interest. The painting is framed with a painted solid line set in from the wooden frame, which gives the illusion that the painted is matted.

Jane Helena Manley, born circa 1819 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. She had an older sister named Sarah (b. 1817). Her father was active in the Dutch Reformed Church and owned a massive amount of property at the time of his death in 1865. Jane actually pre-deceased him by more than a year, but he hadn’t changed his will at the time of his death (the will was entered in both NJ and King County, NY). The family had plenty of funds to support education. Based on Richard’s will, the family included Frances Rebecca Manley, born 1826, who had an unspecified disability. Jane would have been about seven years old when Frances was born.

Crayon on paper; 17 x 24, 20 x 27 inches, with original mahogany veneered frame.
