Description
This is a fantastic drawing done by a school boy of Mary Jane Burgess. Per the note on the back, was drawn sometime around 1836. Ms. Burgess is standing looking off to one side and wears a colorful bonnet, blue dress with red and green apron. Below in very faint lettering is written Mary Burgess. She is framed in what appears to be a later 19th century hand crafted wooden frame. Attached to the back are two different notes regarding the drawing, and inserted under the back wood of the frame was a photograph, . 7" x 9"
After doing some digging, family lore may be incorrect.
Note indicates Mary Jane Burgess, mother of John M. Essex:
Mary Jane (Burgess) Essex b. 1831, m. Philip Essex 1848
Son John M. (Morrison) Essex b. 1/21/1851
Mary Jane (Burgess) Essex d. 2/16/1851
It is possible a schoolmate drew this of Mary Jane when she was young, but assuming she went to school, she would have started school later than 5 years old. The photograph is a cabinet card, possibly of John Essex and his spouse Addie (Malcomber)
Regardless of the history on the back, this is a great piece of youth artwork in a wonderful antique hand made frame.
