Item Details
Description
Alexander Struck (German, 1902-1990). Meissen porcelain "frosche" chess set, 20th century. An elegant and delightfully amusing porcelain "frosche" (frog) chess set designed by German artist Alexander Struck for the Meissen factory, the first producer of porcelain in Europe. One side features frogs that are predominantly green and white, while the other features frogs that are predominantly brown and white. The seated kings are crowned and hold sceptres; the queens hold their heads in their hands; the bishops are rendered as diving frogs; the knights as running frogs; and the rooks as squatting frogs. All pieces have the crossed swords mark in blue underglaze. Quite fine and amusing! Size (king): 3.15" H (8 cm) Size (pawn): 1.18" H (3 cm)
