Classical World, Italy, Etruria, ca. late 5th century BCE. A beautiful red-figure bell krater depicting a series of hoplites. The obverse depicts 2 nude warriors save for helmets, each holding a spear and shield. The bird between then is a token of victory flying towards the winner of the contest, with Nike approaching to bedeck with a celebratory fillet, the goddess adorned in a belted peplos. The reverse features 2 draped figures, both standing as if in debate. Both scenes are illustrated atop a deck of Greek key pattern and below a band of laurel leaves encircling the underside of the rim. Size: 16" W x 14" H (40.6 cm x 35.6 cm)
