William Gladstone 1846 LS to Governor of Mauritius
LS

A letter signed by William Gladstone (1809-1898) and addressed to the Governor of Mauritius, Sir William Maynard Gomm. 2pp front and back, 7.75" x 12.75", dated January 10, 1846, Downing Street, London. Boldly signed by Gladstone at conclusion on verso. Letter is headlined "duplicate no. 4", suggesting it was widely posted and penned in a secretarial hand. Notated with date received on top right corner of recto. Flattened letter folds, with varying degrees of smudging, toning, and foxing throughout. Overall very good condition.

In part:
"I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Dispatch of the 20th September last no. 161, enclosing, and recommending to favorable consideration, a memorial to the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury from the Agent for the Imam of Muscat, praying to be relieved from a Bond which he had entered into in consequence of the illegal introduction into Mauritius of a Cargo of mules."

William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) was a British statesman and Liberal politician, known affectionately by his supporters as "The People's William" or the "G.O.M." ("Grand Old Man"). The year 1846 marked his breakaway from the Conservative party to join the Peelites, a dissident faction originally led by statesman Robert Peel, whom Gladstone was then serving as minister. Following Peel's death in 1850, Gladstone would become leader of the Peelites in the House of Commons, and later appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1852.
