William Gladstone (1809-1898) British politician. Gladstone was first elected to Parliament in 1832. After serving in different government posts, he became prime minister in 1868; he would serve four terms in the office. His accomplishments included expanding the vote and reforms in Ireland. 4 ½” x 6” autograph letter signed, “Downing St,” January 24, 1883, to “My dear Lew.” “…I will…to look into the case of Mr. Dean Munplun with whole &public character I have my prior acquaintance….” Includes four, unsigned, engravings of Gladstone.
