Signed First Day Cover
A First Day Cover signed by sitting 31st U.S. President Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) as "Herbert Hoover" above the typed name of the envelope recipient at lower right. Postmarked from Washington, D.C. on August 27, 1931. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. With a large oval cachet printed "President Hoover Receives / American Air Mail Society / Washington - August 27, 1931" located at lower left. Bearing three cancelled stamps in the postage section, and hand-stamped "First Day Cover" verso. The recipient Emil Thurman later served as Acting Postmaster of New Orleans, Louisiana. Light expected wear and weathering, else near fine. The Air Mail envelope measures 6.5" x 3.625." The slab measures 9.5" x 4.625."
The American Air Mail Society, founded in 1923, united collectors and scholars of airmail and aerophilately around the world. The second-oldest such group of its kind, it's estimated to have about 1,500 members today world-wide.
