A finely executed Japanese mother of pearl-inlaid lacquer scholar's tray, Edo/early Meiji period 日本嵌貝母漆托盤 江戶至明治早

The deep square tray on bracket feet and with shaped skirt, the sides finely-inlaid with scrollwork, “antiques” and symbols of cultural attainments, against a gold ground, the interior and corners with a ground of irregular silver filings, the rim of the tray also inlaid.
