Description
CALONNE, Charles-Alexandre de. Lettera autografa firmata indirizzata a M. Le Vicomte de Peyronnenq de St. Chamarans. Calais, 20 Février 1789Bifolio in 8vo. 200x155 mm. Testo su tre pagine, nitida grafia in corsivo, inchiostro bruno.
Condition
Bifolio in 8vo. 200x155 mm. Text on three pages, clear italic written in brown ink. Address and red sealing wax in the fourth page. Traces of wear and humidity.Interesting letter from Calonne from Calais. The date, 20 February, is very important, since it is certified that Calonne returned to France from England on 30 March, to present his candidacy for the Deputation of Flandre maritime. Convinced that he could still play a role in French politics, the former Controleur general des Finances cleverly tried to weave alliances with the nobles: “Je présume, mon cher Vicomte que votre voyage à Paris vous aura été très avantageux pour vous et pour votre pays ...”; and he adds “Je sais à quel point les intérêts de nos compatriotes nous sont… et je ne doute point que vous en soyez occupé. Je desiré tres ardemment … de les faire valoir dans cette occasion orientale (the convocation of the States General)”. Opposed and derided, Calonne will however have to return immediately to England, where he will be joined by the first emigrants after the storming of the Bastille, including Vicomte de Peyronnenq himself. He will then become one of the main architects of the counter-revolution, holding the position of 'Tresorier de l'Emigration'.
