Description
The main character of the painting is a bearded apostle, depicted with a stern and resolute expression, has turned his head to the right, his gaze penetrating and determined. Draped over his shoulder is a cloak, enveloping his arm as he cradles a book in his hand, positioned in front of his chest. The portrayal of busts or heads featuring apostles emerged as a prominent theme explored by numerous artists during the 17th century. While not a novel subject, it held significance within religious contexts and later gained popularity in printmaking. By the 17th century, it had become a sought-after theme among collectors. Artists imbued each apostle with distinct personalities and characteristics akin to those of ancient philosophers.Around 1610–1612, Rubens crafted a sequence of apostles featuring St. Peter, Simeon, and Salvator, notable for their three-dimensional, heroic depictions (Apostolado Lerma), exerting considerable influence. Inspired by Rubens, Anthony van Dyck embarked on two cycles of apostle heads, the first executed between 1618 and 1620 during his tenure in Rubens' workshop, and the second completed between March and October 1621. The present painting follows in this esteemed tradition, influenced by the artistic legacy of Rubens and van Dyck. Oil on canvas on wood, 66 × 51cm
