Description
Domenico Tintoretto was the son of Jacopo Tintoretto, whose workshop he worked for and whose style he continued. The portrait shows a general in black armor facing right, holding the general's baton in his right hand and his left hand resting on his helmet, which is placed on a table. A red cloak is draped around his shoulders and pinned to his right side with gold snail-shaped buttons. The portrait shows the man in advanced age with gray, short-cropped hair and a white, carefully groomed beard and facial features marked by age, but still strong-willed and vital. The gaze is directed energetically at the viewer. In the window we see a view of a city by the sea with a mountain in the background. So it is not Venice, but a Venetian colony, whose governor (provveditore) the general was probably. Oil on canvas 113 x 98 cm
