Description
Wurkun - Jukun, Pole Figure
55 cm (1' 10"), Eastern Nigeria
A relatively small ethnic group living near the Benue River is known for crafting pole-like sculptures that were placed outside or in hut-like structures and therefore often show strong signs of weathering or possess a thick soot patina with a reddish tint. The present male sculpture impressively displays these characteristics. It could serve as a template for a modern artist, where all body parts are masterfully reduced to a minimum yet remain recognizable. The head is distinguished by a high middle ridge, the eyes are merely suggested, and a stylized beard is visible on the chin. Below a long neck, there is the cylindrical body, over which the arms are entwined starting from the chest, acting as a decorative element. After the discreetly treated genital region, the legs emerge from a divided, seven-centimeter-tall circular base. This is a compelling object of rudimentary beauty and age.
