Description
Rare, 19th Century I & H Sorby Native American Plains Indian dag knife, trading knife specimen. The blade itself shows a pointed, long, tapering double edge blade, marked on one side I & H Sorby, a well-documented 19th Century English maker of dag knife blades, war lance blades, razors, and bayonets who supplied them to the Hudson’s Bay trade company and the American Fur Company in St. Louis. Similar examples of dag knives made from the remnants of war lance blades can be seen in “Early Knives & Beaded Sheaths of the American Frontier” by John Baldwin, 1997. The knife appears to be in good condition and in the style and manner of the 19th Century Sorby lances. Overall, the knife measures 11 7/8 inches in length. * similar knives to this one, when found, have auction starting bids in the $900 range, this knife with a lowered start bid to help liquidate a collection.
