Description
Ancient Egyptian Ptolemaic & Hellenistic Gilded Hair Rings (Group of 4). This lot includes a Ptolemaic Gold Hair Coil Fragment (ca. 332-30 BCE) 1.5 grams in weight & 1” wide. The piece has a thick body with wide terminals. It exhibits attractive luster that is evocative of the opulence of ancient Egypt and Greece. Hair rings like these were meant to secure and decorate the hair of wealthy women in the Classical world (both in life and on corpses that were mummified and buried). There are also 3 Ancient Greek Bronze Hair Rings (ca. 800-300 BCE). All of them have gilding apparent, indicating they were also originally covered in gold. Provenance: ex-Dr. Gerald A. Smith collection. A large portion of’ this collection of antiquities is now housed at the Museum of Us (former Museum of Man) in San Diego, CA & Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, CA.
