Description
Ancient Apulian Magna Graecia, Bell Krater c.350 BC. Size 9-1/2 inches High. x 9-5/8 inches Wide. Fine red-figure pottery twin handles footed Bell Krater, glazed jet black and decorated with red-figure painted scenes with white and yellow pigments. Side A: shows a seated maiden wearing a sleeveless, draped garment, beaded necklace, wristlets and holds a box in her extended left hand. Her legs are extended to the right and she gazes over her shoulder with her body gracefully turned. Side B: features a “lady of fashion” her hair in a saccos and bun, gazing into a hand held mirror. Each scene is bordered beneath by a curled wave design band and there is a band of chevrons beneath the rim. Reassembled from about a dozen or so large, original pieces with no fill, other than in the break lines, and a few very small losses on the broken edges. A fine, small example. Provenance: NJ. collection. Acquired at Arte Primitivo, auction 54, lot 179, 2010. Ex. collection of Ruth Schwalbe, NYC., acquired 1985.
