Description
England 1810-1820s, Green Wine Roemer Glasses (5). Size 4 5/8 - 5 1/4 inches high. Prince of Wales Regency under King George III.Cup Bowl with Applied Prunts on Hollow Stem and Conical Coiled style Foot. This is a wonderful set of 5 C18th English green wine glasses. They have a cup bowl and have applied prunts (that look like flowers or raspberries) to a hollow stem and a conical folded foot with a snapped pontil. They date to the early 1800s/George III. These Georgian glasses are what I think might be known as 'Bristol Green'. the origin of this particular type of glass cup is GERMAN. Roemers (Dutch) or Römer (German) are a type of wine and beer glass that evolved in the Rhineland and the Netherlands from the 17th Century. They have their roots in the Waldglas particularly the Berkemeyer, Krautstrunk and Nuppenbecher of the later Middle Ages which were produced in northern Germany, the Low Countries and central Europe. The forerunners of the Roemer were made in the 15th C as short beakers with an inverted conical shape bowl attached to an open stem decorated with pulled drops or prunts.
