Item Details
Description

JOHN DABOUR (MARYLAND, 1837-1905) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WOMAN WITH RICHMOND, VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION, pastel on paper, mounted to canvas, depicts a young woman wearing a white lacy off-the-shoulder dress, sitting on a blue chair, around her neck is a pearl cross necklace. Signed "J. Dabour / 1872" to top left corner, top right corner reading "D.H. Anderson". It is possible that this portrait is a family member of Anderson, or possibly taken from a photograph by Anderson. Unframed. Dated 1872. American. 30" x 25" OA.
Catalogue Note: John Dabour was born in Turkey of French descent, he went on to study in Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Parisian atelier of Philippe-Auguste Jeanron before coming to Baltimore, MD around 1870. His portraits are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, and many other institutions.
David H. Anderson (1827-1905) was a photographer who began his career during the daguerrean era in Kentucky. He moved several times before setting up his business in Richmond, VA in 1865. He quickly attained a reputation for being one of the most talented portrait photographers in the region. Later moving to New York City, his career continued to flourish, and now his photographic portraits are in the collections of many American institutions. Still working until a few weeks prior to his death in 1905, he was one of the only photographers left who started in the daguerrean era.
