Description
This Thompson patent lantern is an older model with the 5 1/2" diameter base. No patent info on bail ears or under the skirt. I dd an article for the RCAI Express in the mid 1990's on Thompson lanterns. This one just has a dimple of the set screw to sit in. It does not have a brass ferrule. The pinch pot is correct but the fount is undersized. The pinch pot has 2 old holes (probably a Popular Mechanics electrification job). The metal is in very good condition for its age. The globe is flashed red (thin coat of red on the interior of a clear globe). The P&R RR fancy lettering is very nice. Probably Philadelphia & Reading. I do not recall and Reading marked Thompson frames. They are predominantly New England. There is always something seductive about Thompsons. It's the round perforated vents, uniform intakes, bail, skirt, Take your pick.
