Description
Western Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous blackware oinochoe with a trefoil shaped spout and an arched handle in the form of a male figure, perhaps Bacchus (Greek Dionysus) the Roman god of wine. The bare-chested figure faces upward, each arm bent at the elbow to grasp the rim of the spout as a headband crowns his striated coiffure. His lower body tapers to meet the body of the vessel. A band of relief tongue motifs line the lower body of the vessel while the shoulder and rim are adorned with lotus buds. An elegant example of Neoclassical art! Size: 4.5" L x 5" W x 6.8" H (11.4 cm x 12.7 cm x 17.3 cm)

Professionally repaired with restoration and repainting over break lines; all done very well and difficult to nose. A few nicks and abrasions in areas, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent presentation with good remaining pigments and detail.
