Item Details
Description
Central Europe, Germany, Nuremberg, ca. 1493 CE. Folios 118, 152, 153, and 287. A fascinating ensemble of 4 leaves (2-sided pages) from the "Nuremberg Chronicle" (Die Schedelsche Weltchronik / Liber Chronicarum), a large incunable (a book printed before 1501) with woodcut illustrations, including a full cityscape of Salzburg, Germany. The Nuremberg Chronicle is one of the most famous of the Incunabula, written by Hartmann Schedel and printed by Anton Koberger. Schedel obtained a doctorate in medicine in Padua and then moved to Nuremberg, where he became a great collector of books -- a 1498 inventory of his library showed him to have 370 manuscripts and 670 printed books, an enormous quantity for that time period. He drew upon these works to compose his own: the Chronicle paraphrases the events of the Bible and world history, including the history of several European cities. The title was published in both Latin and German; this particular copy is a Latin version. Size of largest (118): 12.5" W x 18.25" H (31.8 cm x 46.4 cm); of matte: 15" W x 20" H (38.1 cm x 50.8 cm)

Provenance: private West Hollywood, California, USA collection; ex-Ferdinand Roten Galleries, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
