Description
Pre-Columbian, Central America, Guatemala, Escuintla region, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 500 to 600 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel used by nobility and royalty to exclusively consume the immensely-popular cacao-based drink. The front of each tab-shaped foot was mold-formed with an inversed maskette before being attached to the bottom of the cylindrical body. Each side of the body features an applied simian maskette centered on an incised panel comprising the rest of the creature. Atop the vessel is a form-fitting discoid lid with incised C-shaped patterns around the top and a bifurcated handle. Size (w/ lid): 6.5" L x 4.875" W x 8.5" H (16.5 cm x 12.4 cm x 21.6 cm)

Condition
Professional repair and restoration to lid and vessel body, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light earthen deposits, with softening to some original finer details, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to overall form and size.
