Item Details
Description
St. Louis Browns Official Score Card and Program. St. Louis, Missouri, [21 July 1951]. 4 pp. scorecard. MULTI-SIGNED BY 24 PLAYERS INCLUDING HOFs JOE DIMAGGIO, SATCHEL PAIGE, PHIL RIZZUTO, & JOHNNY MIZE. Includes a certificate of JSA Authentication.

The program is from the matchup between the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Browns, at St. Louis, on 21 July 1951. The Yankees defeated the Browns, 5-3, and would go on to sweep the 4-game series. 1951 was a pivotal year for the Yankees as it was DiMaggio's last season and Mickey Mantle's first. They won the American League pennant (their 18th) with a record of 98-56, finishing five games ahead of the Cleveland Indians. They won the World Series, defeating their local rival the New York Giants in 6 games.

One of the first appearances for Satchel Paige as a Brown. He had been signed by the St. Louis Browns just 4 days before this matchup, with Paige making his debut for the Browns in 0-1 loss to the Washington Senators on 18 July 1951, his first game back in the majors since 1949. His next start came the day after this program's game, in the first game of the double header on 22 July 1951. The Browns, however, finished last in the AL with an overall record of 51-102.

The signatures appear to have been collected on the day of the game, with all 24 players (some double-signed), on the rosters for both teams. Players signed in pencil on the front and back pages of the scorecard over various local advertisements. The scorecard was left uncompleted. Signatures on the front page, include Yankees: Joe DiMaggio (HOF), Ralph Houk, Johnny Mize (HOF), Tom Morgan, Allie Reynolds, Phil Rizzuto (HOF), Art Schallock; and Browns: Hank Arft, Jim Delsing, Bill Jennings, Duane Pillette, Lou Sleater, Al Widmar. The back page features Yankee Joe Collins; and Browns: Matt Batts, Johnny Bero, Ray Coleman, Ned Garver, Bill Jennings, Sherm Lollar, Fred Marsh Stubby Overmire, Satchel Paige (HOF), Frank Saucier, and Ken Wood.

An incredible piece of ephemera from baseball's greats.
