Description
General Sherman's Pistol, Collections of Asian Daggers & Objet d'Art

The lot includes:

1. Remington rolling block target pistol. 10 in. round barrel, approx. 32 calibre. Made from an altered model 1871 action with buckhorn sight.

2. A collection of 19th century daggers and sculpture from Asia, including:

Tant? dagger with shagreen covered sheath. Japan. -- Curved blade dagger with inlaid handle & sheath. India. -- Dagger with bone handle and repoussé sheath. India(?). -- Wavy sheath, possibly for kris dagger. Indonesia(?).

3. Bronze sculpture of an Elephant. Japan? Approx. ## x ## x ## in.

An eclectic collection preserved in in General Sherman's military trunk (offered in lot 128 "General Sherman's Sword & Trunk").

The block target pistol possibly dates from Sherman's time in Egypt when he was commissioned by Khedive Isma'il Pasha (1830-1895) to reorganize and modernize the Egyptian military. The ambitious ruler of Egypt and Sudan enacted reforms in a monumental effort to modernize the Khedivate. As a part of this effort, over 250,000 rolling blocks were imported to the region between 1869 and 1900. A more detailed analysis of the firearms in the Egypt can be read in John Dunn's article "Remington 'Rolling Blocks' in the Horn of Africa" (1994, available at the americansocietyofarmscollectors.org).

Aside from his time in Egypt in an official capacity, Sherman did not engage in any further international travel. These daggers, however, originate from Japan, India, and southeast Asia, all of which were visited by Ulysses S. Grant in the final year of his "World Tour." It has been suggested that Grant collected these few souvenirs for his dear friend. When the Grant family returned from their trip, Sherman greeted Grant at a reunion held by the veterans of the Army of the Tennessee. (J.F. Packard. Grant's Tour Around the World, p. 853). Though possible, no documentation exists to support the claim.

An interesting group preserved by the Sherman family that merits further research.
