INSCRIBED TO THE GENERAL: "Respectfully Presented to W.T. Sherman General of the United States Army with the Compliments of the Chicago Executive Committee. Chicago Dec. 20. 1869". W. T. Sherman & P. General Sherman loved G.A.R. reunions, typically eschewing the uniform and insignia of his high rank, perferring to wear a G.A.R. hat like everyone else. (Katharine Burton, Three Generations, 1947, p. 216).
