Autograph letter signed by Thomas Taylor to Samuel Shropshire. [Columbus, Colorado County, Texas], 7 January 1861. 1 page, 4to, 7 7/8 x 9 in.
Thomas Taylor, who had settled in Colorado County, Texas in 1854, writes regarding paying for hired-out slaves from the plantation of Samuel Shropshire, the owner of a 750-acre plantation who enslaved over 60 individuals. He opens: "Mr. Shropshire requested me to let you know that he wishes the negro hire settled." He continues with his own money problems, informing him that no hogs were delivered.
Condition: very small separations along old folds with minor toning.
