A Greek black figure style attic jug, decorated with the mythological story of Hercules freeing Prometheus from the eagle that consumed his liver daily. Zeus had tied Prometheus to a rock as punishment for stealing fire from the Gods and giving it to humans. Complete with a signature and the word HEPA. Wear to the decoration and a small repair to the base of the handle. 24cm high. Found in a garden in Cambridge U.K.Although first produced in Corinth, then additional fine examples made in Laconia and southern Italy (by Euboean settlers), it would be the potters and painters of Attica who would excel above all others in the black-figure style, and they would go on to dominate the Greek market for the next 150 years.
