Item Details
Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Athabascan culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of beautiful, beaded mukluks or high top moccasins handmade from hide, likely caribou or moose, with a brown fur trim (possibly beaver), and the interior is lined with cotton. The hide is a brushed leather / suede texture with red ribbon trim. The beadwork is colorful and in superb condition- a winged heart motif on the calf and a star-flower on the toe. This pair is soft soled and therefore probably intended for dance or ceremony rather than everyday use. Mukluks are the traditional cold weather boots of Arctic people and traditionally made of fur; the word comes from the Yupik word "maklak" for bearded seal. Size: 11" L x 16" H (27.9 cm x 40.6 cm)
