Description
Barry, D.F. HAIRY CHIN AS UNCLE SAM. 1889. Printed later. Silver print in brown windowed mat. Print (sight): 16.5 x 11.5 cm; mat: 27 x 19 cm. "Barry" blindstamped on print towards bottom left and again on mat. Inked caption on mat below window. With Barry's printed "vignette" on the story of the photograph mounted to verso inside mat. It is said that this photograph brought Hairy Chin bad luck as two days after Barry took his picture dressed as Uncle Sam for a 4th of July celebration, Hairy Chin died; his community believed this was a consequence of the "bad medicine" brought on by wearing the costume Barry put him in; Barry feared he had overfed Hairy Chin. Rare portrait by an important photographer of Indigenous people. Generally very good condition (from sight). *Additional images and detailed condition reports are available upon request.
