Rare South Carolina July 6, 1789 Six Pence "Beehive" Note "Abernethie" Engraved, Second & Finest We Have Offered
South Carolina. July 6, 1789. City of Charleston. Six Pence. "Beehive" vignette. Engraved by Thomas Abernethie. PMG graded About Uncirculated-55.
Fr. SC-194. This rare smaller format "City of Charleston" note is engraved by (Thomas) "Abernethie" of Charleston, SC. His name appears engraved within the plate just below the Beehive vignette. This note appears Choice CU with just a bit of trivial natural tone on the blank reverse, with no negative comment. It has four Jumbo margins and great centering, Signed "L. Foster". Only 12,000 6 Pence notes were authorized and was repealed in October 1793. Virtually all surviving notes have no serial numbers. We previously offered only one example which was in our EAHA Auction of February 13, 2015 Lot 311, PMG graded About Uncirculated-50 which sold for $2,160. We have not offered a second 6 Pence "Beehive" note until now.
*Note: In our EAHA Auction of May 27, 2023 we offered and sold Thomas Abernethie's Own Personal Autographed Book titled, "The History of the Revolution of South Carolina...", with his historic Engraved Fold-out Map of Charleston Harbor Contained Within, Engraved by Thomas Abernethie. That unique Signed book sold for $5,625 to the diligent collector.
THOMAS ABERNETHIE (1783 - August 20, 1795). 18th Century Land Surveyor, Printer, and Engraver was active in Charleston, South Carolina, who arrived in Charleston during American Revolutionary War, about 1783.
